Define size of LCD display

Hi There
I have noticed that there are a lot of people having difficulty finding the start address of the 3rd and 4th lines of an Alpha-numeric LCD display. Would it be possible to define the display size (to 16 * 4 , 20 * 4 or what ever) when setting up the display in LCD_init() ?

I am afraid that would cause greater confusion than benefit.
