PIC24 current

#1 Post by antonadc » 18 May 2016 09:53

Hi everyone.

Quick question. I built a quick dev vero board for this chip. After programming it to blink a LED and it works great but I noticed the current was over 100ma. Is this normal for this pic. I am running it at 80mhz with a 8mhz crystal. If I insert a 4 MHz crystal it drops to 50ma. If I press the reset switch and bring everything to a halt the current drops to 8 or 10ma which is what the regs draw. I have the vcap right at 10mfd and the analog vss is to gnd and the analog vdd to plus 3.3v. The LED has a 1K resistor in series and I have a 100nf on the 3.3 v and gnd. Never had a pic draw so much current. This is a brand new chip. I got 3 samples from microchip.

Hi,

Can you please tell me how did you measure those values, and which exact MCU did you use?

Best regards,

Uros

Thank you for reply but the datasheet says 76ma at 25deg c so with 76ma and external regulators it will add up to 100ma. Even in sleep mode it draws a lot of current. I think its this particular pic family that does it. Thanks

Difficult to say if you give no information... (we don't know what controller you have)
Regards,

Peter.
